This post is part of an ongoing series documenting resume makeovers. Each resume was created by the Blue Sky Resumes team for one of our clients, although the details have been changed to protect confidentiality. We hope the resumes, and our strategy explanations will inspire you to makeover your own resume.
The Original Resume
Susan has a very strong background with lots of exciting achievements, but they weren’t really being reflected on her existing resume. What’s more, she works in the fast-paced and ever-changing world of digital media, yet her original resume looked very conventional and more than a little old-fashioned.
Here is what she came to us with:
Our strategy
In talking to Susan, it became clear that the look of the resume didn’t reflect her personality at all. She’s an upbeat, energetic executive with a passion for new and emerging technologies and a real drive for success. Throughout her career, she had driven strong revenue and profit growth through her innovative ideas, and we wanted to make this the central theme of the resume.
The key to writing a strong digital media resume at any level is to show results. This is because, more than in almost any other profession, success can be measured very specifically. Website traffic, conversion rates, open rates, advertising ROI – you name it, it can be measured.
Therefore, it’s crucial to pack a digital media resume with results and numbers – especially at the executive-level – and that’s what we did for Susan. But we also went a step further and showed how she achieved those results. In doing so, we conveyed her ability to constantly innovate.
Take a look at how we did it.
The executive resume makeover
Notice how we focused on facts and results in the introduction to this new resume.
Too many professionally written resumes are filled with over-the-top hype and the problem is that no recruiter in his right mind pays attention to hype.
So here we backed up our claims about Susan with evidence, by stating that she doubled sales and increased traffic 20x.
We also backed up her claims of expertise with the fact that she’s frequently featured in industry publications.
Then as we progressed throughout the resume, we emphasized the themes of results, expertise and innovation by outlining specific stories of achievement packed with measurable results.
The result is an executive resume that truly packs a punch.
